This fantastic bike-packing adventure takes you to the heart of the Equatorial Andes, known as the Avenue of Volcanoes, visiting the Quilotoa Crater Lake and then biking into the Toachi canyon, you will be fascinated by the beauty of this area and also the interaction with the local people, it is mostly cross country biking on dirt roads and easy single tracks.

ARRIVAL IN QUITO CITY

Welcome to Quito! The biggest, best-preserved colonial city of America was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city is considered the Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day exploring the old town of Quito and the surrounding area. ECUADOR PURE LIFE can help you to organize a day trip.

In the evening, one of our trip leaders will meet you at the hotel for a welcome briefing and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Our first day is an informational and acclimation day.

QUILOTOA CRATER LAKE

Today we will drive for 3 hours to the Indigenous Market of Pujili, here we will learn about the Andean products and the traditional food, later we go to the Illinizas Ecological reserve, at 12500 feet, and hike into Quilotoa Carter Lake, magical and beautiful because of its formation and turquoise color water,the hike will take about 45 minutes and then is optional to kayak across the lake, for the way back up you can hike or ride a mule.

BIKEPACKING FROM QUILOTOA TO INSILIVI

After breakfast we get on our bikes and continue the adventure following a trail that surrounds the crater and then continue on a dirt road to a small farmers village, along the way we will appreciate the colorful fields of corn, quinoa, fava beans and potatoes, in the morning we will go mostly down into the Toachi canyon and in the adfternoon we will go back up to Isinlivi for the overnight.

BIKEPACKING FROM ISINLIVI TO LASSO

In the morning for the people interested can go for milking a cow with the indigenous people, and after breakfast we will ride is mostly on a dirt road with very little traffic, the first section is mostly uphill for about two hours and then downhill with amazing rocky views and paved road to a Historical Hacienda where we spend the overnight.

BIKEPACKING FROM THE HACIENDA TO COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK

Today we will get into the thin air biking to 13000 feet to the Cotopaxi National Park, the first part would be on a dirt road throw the nearby farms and then on a paved road with exclusive biking lines, and finally after 2 hours we get into the reserve and start biking again on a dirt road, the main attraction of this day is the Cotopaxi Volcano with over than 19000 feet is considered as the highest active volcano on earth, is the perfect cone volcano, and it surrounds a beautiful Andean high ecosystem known as Paramo, no much vegetation grows here but is amazing to see the landscape with several mountains and other volcanoes, we will have lunch in the reserve and then bike to the campsite right in front of Cotopaxi.

BIKEPACKING FROM COTOPAXI TO QUITO

Today is a very awesome day as we ride single track in the reserve and along the way we can see a lot of volcanic material from the last eruption of Cotopaxi that was about 140 years ago, as we continue bikepacking we can have different views of this fantastic volcano, we will enjoy a nice lunch on the way and then continue on a dirt and cobblestone road to Quito city.

ACCOMODATION


All prices are based on double-occupancy. If you are travelling solo, you will be matched with another participant of your same sex. If you prefer to have a single room, please contact EPL prior to your departure to arrange your accommodation at an extra cost.



MEALS


Travelling with Ecuador Pure Life you will have the possibility to experience and taste local food and snacks. Your guide will help you identify typical food and suggest the best places to enjoy it. Some meals are not included in order to give you some flexibility about where, what and with whom to eat. You have the option to share these meals with the group, however there is no obligation to do this. If you have any allergies or food restrictions, please inform EPL prior to your departure.



YOUR TRIP LEADERS AND GUIDES


All EPL guides and trip leaders are highly experienced, licensed to operate in Ecuador and certified as Wilderness Adventure First Aid responders. We always carry a complete first aid kit in our trips.
In some location and for some activities, local guides join the trip leaders to provide an added service. In the Galapagos Islands, minimum 4 participants for the EPL trip leader service are required.
